On Teaching Seth Filipino --

The early part of pre-school is fun -- the kids go to school to learn songs, have snacks, learn the alphabet, play, etc.

Pre-school gets "serious" when the kid enters kindergarten -- the number of subjects double. (In Nursery, Seth had 4 "subjects" and now he has 7 -- not counting PE.)

They had their first quarterly exams early this month and I was dreading his Filipino score.

We do his Filipino homework together and it's been difficult for the both of us. I try not to show that I am daunted by the language because I know he will see that and will be discouraged. I'm lucky because Seth has very good study/work habits -- and is very industrious once we're seated at his study table.

When the result of his quarterly exams came out, I was not surprised that he made 7 mistakes in his Filipino exam.

I've been thinking about this since school started and I am determined to help Seth (and myself) learn Filipino.

I found a wonderful set of textbooks in National Bookstore.

We're using the first book, which is for Nursery and I love how the lessons are presented. It begins with the alphabet and introduces all the vowels first. For each letter, 8 words are introduced and repeatedly used -- it's a great beginner vocabulary. (I only just learned that "sieve" is "embudo" in Filipino.)

Every Friday and Saturday, we sit down and do a few pages. (It's good that Seth's school doesn't send home homework for the weekend. I wouldn't like it if his mind gets jumbled with other subjects.)

We only started but I can see that the lessons are sticking! Just yesterday, Seth pointed to the fried egg on his plate and said, "Mama, itlog!"

Maybe in a month or two, we can start building his vocabulary and I'm really excited to make flash cards with him. ^_^

My cousin shared a great idea in her blog -- she lets her kids read Filipino storybooks so that they can familiarize themselves with the language.

So we're planning to slowly build a Filipino storybook library. ^_^

I also found this wonderful article online: How to Introduce the Filipino Language to Your Child.

Happy Buwan ng Wika everyone!
